Make that Thing

Aug 31
Life can deliver gifts in disguise. The loss I’ve experienced makes me grateful for every year I’m alive. It also gives me a sense of urgency: if something’s calling me, I need to answer. Meanwhile, getting older has made me less embarrassed: I now understand that growth requires making mistakes and sometimes looking foolish, so I roll with it.

Still, there are many ups and downs in the creative process. As I take my own journey towards making a thing (Incredible Mind), I’ve experienced uncertainty, doubt, frustration, and joy. After talking with Zorana Ivcevic Pringle, I see my experience is universal.
Zorana has written a book called The Creativity Choice. In it, she walks us through the ups and downs of ideating, creating and “finishing” a creative project. Zorana explains that certain emotions -like uncertainty- are inherent to the process and must be tolerated, while other emotions- like elation, frustration, and even grumpiness- can be harnessed to complete specific tasks.

For Zorana, creative work includes everything from starting a business to decorating a cake. I agree. I’ve also found that finishing small creative projects helps us build confidence. As Zorana puts it, little wins help establish a sense of creative self-efficacy, which helps us say “yes I can.” Whether you have a big idea or you’re in the exploration phase, work on building creative self-efficacy.

I spent years designing training and self-paced learning for a wide variety of industries, and I gained a lot of self-efficacy by doing, re-doing, and exploring the ins and outs of my craft. Later, when my big idea arrived, I spent a few more years writing in my spare time, learning and developing a voice for my passion (creative and critical thinking). This year has been the year to launch. None of it was easy- I have a family on top of a career- but it was worth every early morning and emotional struggle. And it’s only getting started, so stamina and perseverance will continue to be needed!
